Outside the
Box but Still in the Package
In browsing the TCI website or catalog you'll find a chart
listing their available transmission packages for Ford C4's
and C6's. TCI's line of packages are broken down by application
much like their stand alone transmissions listed in the chart
on page one. All predetermined packages come with fluid and
a transmission cooler. However, while choosing one of TCI's
advertised transmission packages may be the right solution
for your application, choosing one is much like buying a crate
motor in that it they are fairly non-specific.

TCI's predetermined C4 and C6 transmission
packages have been created to best suit a general field of
automatic equipped Ford project cars, but we all know that
individual project cars have special needs. For "hands-on"
enthusiasts, the TCI transmission package should be thought
of more as a concept rather than a chart where you suddenly
say "Voila, that's the package for me". Creating
your own custom package with the help of a TCI tech representative
is the best option. In fact, that's just what we did in the
case of Project Torino. Here's the custom package we came
away with after working with TCI's tech help.

Inside
the TCI Facility
When you think of buying a "new" transmission from
an outfit like TCI rather than having your own core rebuilt,
you may picture this large manufacturing plant complete with
a foundry where brand new transmission cases are cast, machined,
cleaned, and painted. Well, this isn't the "case".
TCI is considered a remanufacturer since their transmissions
and converters start with a previously used OEM core. From
a production standpoint this just makes sense, but don't think
for a minute that you're paying full price for a product that
uses worn components.
At TCI, stock parts like bands, sprags, and clutches are replaced
with performance replacements depending on which grade transmission
you buy. Fluid flow, lubrication system,
and thrust capacity are increased and problematic hard parts
are replaced with stronger components, many of which are fabricated
by TCI with in-house machining centers. Valve bodies
are completely remanufactured and 100% tested. Here are a
few shots from within the TCI facility that demonstrate some
elements of the remanufacturing process.

OEM cores are where it all begins
at TCI. Here's a C6 on the bench in the beginning stages
of teardown. |
|

Internal components that will be reused are inspected
(i.e., planetary gears, main shaft, input shaft). High
wear or inferior OE parts are replaced (i.e., bands, sprags,
and clutches) |
|
|
|

OEM valve bodies are disassembled,
inspected, cleaned and prepared for reassembly to improve
lubrication and line pressure. |
|

Here, a heavy duty pressure regulator
spring is added to the valve body to increase main line
hydraulic pressure. |
|
|
|

Correct line pressure is verified to meet specifications
on this test machine. Note the valve body type specific
jig. |
|

This ring gear is packed with a
thrust bearing to replace the OEM washer. |
|
|
|

What really separates TCI from local
rebuilders is their testing procedures. Here's a C6 at
the last stage of the remanufacturing process, on the
dyno. |
|

The final product reaches the customer, bead blasted,
and painted. Obviously, all seals and gaskets are replaced
regardless of what transmission you get from TCI. |
