We started off on our suspension upgrade with some of the easier components to install in the Hyper Flex kit. We figured the immediate satisfaction would motivate us to get the entire kit installed as soon as possible. Follow along as we detail the major points of installing each component.

Sway Bar Bushings
With over 100,000 hard commuting miles on the '88 Mustang, it was no suprise that the car felt loose and unstable. Replacing the sway bar bushings alone was so impressive that we knew once the rest of the kit was installed the car would handle like it was on rails.


The kit comes with sway bar end-link bushings and hardware. Energy Suspension sells the sway bar mount bushings separately, due to variations in sway bar diameter.
 
Remove the old sway bar frame mounts and end links. It's best to remove one side at a time, then carefully lower the bar down.
     

The stock rubber bushings were extremely deteriorated. This leads to a car that reacts unpredicably when the wheels encounter bumps and other road deviations.
 
Apply the supplied lubricant before installing the new sway bar frame bushings. There should be enough grease to fill the grease channels cut inside the bushing.
     

Two different sway bar bushings are available. Shown is the greasable type with a new upper mount bracket which has a zerk fitting. The standard bushing kit reuses the factory mount.
 
The sway bar is reattached with the new endlink bushings and hardware. Tighten the endlinks just until the bushings begin to bulge.
     

Rack and Pinion Mounts
We had actually been planning to replace the rack and pinion on this car for some time. In fact we had the new unit sitting in the shop for the past few weeks. With the front end already on jack stands from the sway bar bushing overhaul, we decided to take another hour and replace the rack, and install the supplied Hyper Flex rack bushings.

Rubber bushings come pre-installed on OEM rack and pinion units to ensure the steering wheel transmits virtually no road response to the driver. Many autocrossers and road racers swap to aluminum to regain positive wheel feedback, however the absence of all absorption can be hard on the hands. Polyurethane offers a substantial improvement in tactile control, without the harshness of a solid link.


The Hyper Flex master kit comes with two sets of rack and pinion bushings. The standard bushings are for cars at stock ride height. Lowered Mustangs can reduce the effects of bumpsteer with offset rack bushings (top row).
 
We installed the standard polyurethane rack bushings at the same time we replaced our worn steering rack and pinion unit. The stock rubber bushings can simply be pushed out and the new one go in with a coat of the supplied lubricant.
